Afterward learning most Victor's career decision, Yuri Plisetsky, a rising 15-year-one-time Russian prodigy skater, travels to Hasetsu to make Victor keep a hope fabricated prior to the beginning of the series. Victor had promised he would choreograph a routine specifically for Yuri P. if he won the Inferior World Championships, which Yuri P. presumably did. Victor, having forgotten about his promise to Yuri P., makes the two Yuris compete against each other to determine who he will bus. He chooses ii songs for the skaters, both with the same melody but with a unlike meaning. The beginning vocal, "Afraid", was about unconditional love, and is given to Yuri P. Depiction of aforementioned-sexual practice relationship [edit]

Praise [edit]

A screenshot from the show, depicting Victor apparently kissing Yuri K., who looks surprised

The "buss" in episode 7 between Victor Nikiforov (left) and Yuri Katsuki (correct); although critics and fans take information technology equally a osculation, its ambiguity leaves the determination up to the viewer. In the official fanbook, manager Sayo Yamamoto stated that she faced censorship in regards to the buss.[134]

Yuri on Ice was praised for including a same-sex romantic relationship between Yuri K. and Victor.[41] Among moments highlighted past critics are an credible osculation in the seventh episode,[h] [42] [38] [135] an substitution of gold rings (indicating a spousal relationship or engagement) in the 10th episode,[e] [136] [137] and Victor's tears when Yuri suggests catastrophe their partnership in the twelfth episode.[j] [136] The osculation won the 2016 The Anime Awards for Nigh Heartwarming Scene.[54] The exchange of rings between Yuri K. and Victor in the 10th episode is considered the start time such a relationship has been depicted in anime. Gabriella Ekens wrote for Anime News Network, "Yuri on Ice, in depicting a sincere and uncomplicated engagement between ii dudes, is unprecedented in anime. At that place hasn't even been a for real gay marriage in Japan, and so this show is depicting something that isn't legally possible in its country of origin".[137] For Anime United kingdom News, Ian Wolf called the substitution of rings "the best scene in the serial".[136] According to Wolf, the anime is an example of the Odagiri outcome.[138]

Yuri on Ice has highlighted homophobia in figure skating and other areas; the seventh episode features a flashback in which a younger Victor performs in a costume based on those worn by openly gay effigy skater Johnny Weir, who was subject to homophobic comments throughout his career.[h] [42] Weir said in an interview with The Geekiary,

I think all positive imagery of LGBT themes in sport are good. Unfortunately, the majority of people that rule the skating globe are bourgeois and more business organisation minded. I remember many of them, while they may beloved and appreciate the art and the sport, are more interested in the concern side of things or power trips. I don't know if Yuri on Ice will be able to change the perception of gay athletes to a threescore yr old man of affairs, only I am of the school of idea that every little chip helps.[36]

The serial finale features a scene in which Yuri K. and Victor skate together at an exhibition result; something which has non yet occurred in bodily contest.[j] [136] Critics have noted that the series depicts ii characters from countries with problems concerning LGBT rights.[38]

Yuri on Water ice differs from other anime roofing same-sex relationships, such every bit yaoi and yuri. Carli Velocci of Geek.com wrote,

Their relationship exists somewhere beyond any sexuality, meaning it doesn't autumn into the same traps that a lot of yuri and yaoi relationships practise ... While this isn't the first anime with a same-sex couple at the forefront, it's one of the starting time to nowadays a story that isn't strictly sexual and is mutual. Yuri and Victor complement each other, but both besides admit that they've grown as people because of the presence of the other. The equality in their relationship is revolutionary, fifty-fifty if it wasn't the start to depict one. Y'all tin assign the "seme" or "uke" label to Victor and Yuri, but when it comes to their psychological bail, it'due south more than equal ... Yuri and Victor aren't just another gay anime couple. They're almost existent.[139]

A review in Otaku USA has argued that the skaters have on an androgynous advent when they are performing, saying:

While on water ice in the series proper, the main performers often take on an androgynous appearance to feed the bear witness's substance. Yuri'south evolution in terms of confidence and capabilities is at the cadre of the plot, but the eye lies in Yuri'southward exploration of his feminine side via emotional expression. ... Gender roles are farther addressed via Viktor'southward [sic] lines of encouragement to Yuri that, at least equally translated, imply both skating management and romantic proposition.[140]

Criticism [edit]

The relationship has too been criticized as unrealistic, with Yuri K. and Victor not receiving the homophobic corruption they would experience in real life.[137] Others have remarked that some viewers might refuse to admit the relationship because the homosexuality was not explicit. Although the "osculation" is obscured by Victor's arm, information technology is implicit.[h] Cecilia D'Anastasio of Kotaku wondered why the "osculation" was blocked when other anime, such every bit From the New World, had depicted gay kisses.[40] Wolf of Anime UK News originally said of the scene that: "I'g 99.999% sure the osculation did occur, but that 0.001% is horribly getting to me. I don't want to get past what everyone else sees – I want to come across what is actually going on, and share in the reaction of the characters at the same time as them".[38] However, by the 12th episode, he said that the scene in which Victor cries was the proof he wanted:

If the kiss is the initial spark, and the rings the visible sign of dearest, and then the tears are proof that you don't want it to end. I take been maxim all the fourth dimension that what I wanted was text rather than subtext – merely in end, I think the subtext did really pay off.[136]
